At Kyosei, we believe that there is only one kind of system that truly counts – a system that creates a Result of Note™. Wellness and Work-Life BalanceMany clients begin working with us because they want to increase energy, reduce stress, create more life-work balance, and generally experience a greater sense of wellbeing and vitality. Unfortunately, it is this natural and often unconscious drive for balance that prevents people from attaining the levels of success and wellbeing they desire and prevents businesses from breaking through the barriers that will shift them from surviving to thriving. Here’s why: Webster’s Dictionary defines balances as “A state of equilibrium.” Equilibrium, however, is defined as “a condition in which all acting influences are canceled by others, resulting in a stable, balanced or unchanging system.” When you are striving for balance, in essence, you are striving for things to be stable and unchanging. Here lies the problem. When people talk about wanting more balance, they do not want to stay the same. They want things to change. They want to have more of some things (such as health, happiness, money, better relationships) or less of others (such as stress, debt, illness, and overwork). To achieve this shift, unfortunately, they need to upset the balance. They need to destroy equilibrium in their lives, at least temporarily, in order to get from where they are to where they want to be. Rather than being helpful in getting what they want, the subconscious desire for balance is the mechanism that kicks in to thwart any efforts at change and bring a person right back to where they started. Balance is a great thing to strive for if you are already where you want to be, but the reality is that few people have reached their ideal state. What’s more, human nature dictates that even once you have reached your ideal, you will find a new ideal to reach for. Finally, outside forces beyond your control are always acting on you and your environment to disturb the balance. The bottom line? Your natural desire for balance and comfort is part of the problem. To thrive, you must master the ability to constantly shift the balance from where you are to where you want to be, and actually learn to enjoy this process of constant change. So if balance is part of the problem, what is the solution? Life-Work Integrity™ provides a “healthy alternative” to the constant tug of war between material success and balance that plagues so many people in our world today. It is both a better predictor of one’s ability to thrive and a smarter target to aim for. So what is Life-Work Integrity? Life-Work Integrity™Life-Work Integrity™ is defined as “a state of optimal and ongoing alignment between who you are and what you do.” This state of alignment is fostered through growing your understanding and awareness of two key elements – Passions and Needs – and cultivating your ability to meet your Needs in a way that aligns with your Passions. This ability is the foundation for achieving and sustaining energy, health, performance, excellence, vitality, prosperity and lasting fulfillment on many different levels.Life-Work Integrity is the most essential foundation for any individual to thrive in life and work.Any young person starting out in life hopes to find work that will be a vehicle to achieve success that consists of happiness, fulfillment, passion, health, contribution, and many other elements of an abundant life. Their early training teaches them that fitting in, following orders and learning to push themselves is the way to achieve success. At first it seems to work, but somewhere along the way it begins to dawn on them that their “reward” for achievement is simply increasing expectations from both themselves and others to keep doing more, being more, and having more. What’s worse, they discover that following the direction, advice and guidance others have given them for what success looks like, what goals they should consider worthy, and how to go about achieving those goals has taken them so far away from understanding who they really are and what they really want that even the success they have achieved seems meaningless. Most people are taught to succeed on others terms by becoming more of who others tell them they “should” be. Life-Work Integrity provides people with a vision of life and work that focuses their ability to create success on their own terms by becoming more of who they truly are.Life-Work Integrity is not a static state. It evolves just as your awareness of who you are does and as the opportunities to choose who you want to be and what you want to do emerge in all areas of your life and work. While this may seem to make it more difficult to achieve, it actually makes it more realistic and attainable. Life is constantly changing, so a concept of thriving that aligns with this principle of constant change and evolution is more aligned with the principles of nature. Balance cannot offer this as it is a construct designed to preserve what is, not to create what could be. Life-Work Integrity is a standard that you can use to guide your choices in each and every moment towards thriving. Balance guides choices by asking, “Will this keep me stable, secure, safe, comfortable, and/or return me to a state of equilibrium?” Life-Work Integrity guides choices by encouraging you to ask, “Who am I? Who do I want to be? What action/choice can I take/make that will be most in alignment with this?” The former blocks or slows growth, the latter requires it. Life-Work Integrity focuses you on critical elements of lasting success. Using it as your measure of success leads you to look at the degree of alignment you have between who you are and what you are doing in each moment, not the degree of stability or equilibrium you have. This might seem like a semantics, but if you talk to the most happy, successful, healthy, fulfilled and truly thriving people in the world the one thing you will find they have in common is a passion for constantly discovering more of who they are, choosing who they want to become and taking action to align their lives and work with these discoveries. Once again, using Life-Work Integrity as a goal promotes and encourages the natural healthy process of growth, whereas using balance as your goalpost discourages it. The ultimate benefit… Life-Work Integrity has one other ultimate benefit. It is the secret to sustainability. Over the last 20 years, science and the media have contributed to a widespread knowledge of how the actions of human beings are impacting our natural environment on a global scale. It has become common knowledge that every living thing has it’s own unique niche and that taking it out of that niche can upset not only the entire ecosystem from which it was taken, but also the entire ecosystem into which it is introduced. The true roots of unsustainability lies in the fact that the majority of human beings are not in their rightful niche. Achieving Life-Work Integrity is about identifying and constantly moving more into alignment with your rightful niche. Not only does this restore health and vitality in your own life, it restores health and abundance to the system as a whole.
